Foursquare

Stubborn as I am! Through the years I preferred to shoot my subjects with just my little flashes. Call me a die-hard strobist or whatever… but even my most critical portraits that I have done are all lit by just these. But wait, don’t underestimate the power of these speedlights, they are as effective as the studio lights minus the big bulky weight. And to places where studio lights cannot go, the speedlights can get there in no time. There is a much cliche and buzz about “shooting at the studio” which frankly I’m not too comfy about it. While I’m not dumping the word “studio”, in my humble opinion, it is sometimes overused and hyped.

Anyway, to further pursue my strobist adventures, I have a new secret weapon. Secret not anymore hehe. Foursquare. (Click here for more info >> Foursquare). Just to give you an idea, Foursquare is a small square block that will enable you to put a maximum of 4 speedlights in one set. Now that’s power when you need it, at 4x! And not only that, it allows accessories to be attached, like umbrellas, softbox and combinations in between. And for just a few $$, I can have studio-like quality and power + mobility. Here below, this is a 2-umbrella setup, I only used 2 SB-800s in here:

Further sustaining my stubbornness to continue to light my subjects this way, with Foursquare in my bag, I won’t look any further. As long as it gets the job done, I don’t think any “studio” cliche is needed. Here’s a test shot below, showing the ability to give a softbox-like studio lighting with just 2 SB-800s and a small thingy called Foursquare. Can’t wait to fill my cup…
