Can the Micro Four Thirds shoot action?

That’s got to be one of the more interesting feature that the Micro Four Thirds camera has to address. I’ll chime in my thoughts… Apparently this is where the Micro 4/3s still lags behind up to these times, but this is not to rule out its abilities. It can shoot action, but when compared to the larger cousins like the Nikon DSLRs, it’s still notches below.

Autofocus speed is not in question when we are talking about the latest generations of Micro 4/3s cameras, but the ability to track in continuous autofocus, this is where it still needs vast improvements – the contrast-detection AF module just couldn’t keep up and the live view’s refresh rate has still to be developed further.

I had an opportunity to shoot some action shots last week during the Waray Art Revolution (WAR), out of probably a hundred shots, I got around 60-70% of the times where I nailed the focus (not bad actually!). The others were mostly the inability to track down the focus on subsequent frames. I used the Panasonic G3, it nailed the focus spot on for single AF most of the times, but for continuous, it barely kept up. I can live with the trade-offs though, it’s not something I would be shooting on a regular basis. Heck, there was even a time when all cameras were in manual focus hahaha… Here’s hoping Panasonic and Olympus will improve on this area on the next generations of Micro 4/3s camera! For the meantime, I’m happy…
